Bush Dry. My first enounter with this bean was John Withee's Wanigan Associates bean network in the late 1970's. John had grown up in the state of Maine and was familiar with Maine logging camps and this beans connection with them. Frederick Wiseman's Seeds of Renewal Project had identifed this bean also as having Abenaki roots in New England. Seed donor of this variety is Ben Levitt of Hardwick, Vermont.

A single plant in that row wanted to be a non-conformist, and sent out eye-catching streaked pods and seeds".

Semi Runner Dry. Plants grow to about two feet tall. They are very productive producing solid reddish pink pods as the seed matures then drying to the typical light tan color of a beans dry pod. My seed donor is Tamara Clement of Sudbury, Ontario, Canada 2021.

Mbombo Green

Pole/Dry/Snap. This unique green colored seed can be used in soups or pods can be eaten as a green vegetable. The variety originates in Kenya Africa. To the people of the Kuba tribe Mbombo is associated with the Creator God. The bean itself is thought of as a sign of prosperity and bringing good fertility to the soil. Seed donor Stephen Smith originally from Guthrie, Kentucky.

Semi Runner Dry. I am calling this bean a semi runner but don’t really know if it is. The beans appear so similar to Black Turtle that I do suspect this bean will grow the same way. Sent to me by a bean farmer in Twin Falls, Idaho, 2020. He told me it was a very popular bean 20 years ago and now nobody seems to want them.

Pole Wax. Grown for nearly half a century in his Seatle garden by Angelo Pellegrini who was a renowned English Professor and great voices of American culinary literature. Author of “The Unprejudiced Palate” (1948), “The Food Lovers Garden” (1970), “Lean Years, Happy Years” (1983). After his death in 1991 his son Brent cultivates the Pellegrini family heirloom. The bean is not about genetics, but culture and the connection it has all the way back to the little villages in Italy.

Produces good yeilds of 4 inch pods.Also reistant to mosaic virus I would probably grow it on my hog panels like I do other semi runner beans. In Kentucky at seed swaps I have had people asking if I had this bean with me. I think this is a variety that someone probably gave me at the Livingston, Tennesse seed swap in October 2018.

Pole Snap. Brought to Canada in the early 1900’s by a Mr. Tung who was a Chinese immigrant. My seed donor of this bean is Brynn Pailett of Lebanon, Tennessee 2018. In the summer of 2023 this bean has become another of my all time favorite snap beans. I picked Mr. Tung pods up to 8 inches delicious and stringless. One of our Canadian network growers on Victoria Island Annette Barley in years past has given this bean glowing praise also. Dry pods are not the easiest or the hardest to hand shell but they shell quite cleanly. The dry pods don't produce much chaff.
